from Sheeri K. Cabralto Bob, Ed date Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 7:13 AM subject A concern mailed-by gmail.com It has been taking me quite a while to edit Keith's Chapter 2, and I'm somewhat concerned. I haven't finished editing it yet, but I have had to rewrite major sections of it, because there is a lot of writing that is directly plagiarized from the (copyrighted) MySQL online manual. In the "From TE" folder, if you look at "416912 ch02 TE.doc", the Gnu/Linux part of the installation borrows a lot from: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/6.0/en/linux-rpm.html The Solaris documentation is copied verbatim from: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/6.0/en/solaris-installation.html The Windows installation starts with a section that has very little changed from: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/6.0/en/windows-choosing-package.html Windows->Configuration Wizard->Detailed Configuration -- all the ".... Dialog Boxes" are pretty much taken verbatim from the "...Dialog" sections of the manual found here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql-windows-excerpt/6.0/en/mysql-config-wizard.html I wrote to Keith: ------------------- By the way, I had to rewrite the Linux and Solaris parts of Chapter 2 -- they were copied and pasted directly from the MySQL Manual. that's a big no-no -- the manual is copyrighted. :( His response was: Yes, I know that the material was very close to what was in the manual. I intended to go back over it before you got to it. Not making excuses and I am sorry you had to rewrite those parts. One thing about this..if I ever do this again I will be much wiser in terms of schedule :) ---------------- That was before I'd realized the Windows parts were copied, too.....at this point I'm worried about the integrity of the book at this point.....I'll continue editing as per the schedule, but I wanted your advice, as I don't want this affecting my name/career/trustworthiness. It's very possible that Keith copied and pasted a lot to use as a guide, as this was the first chapter he wrote, and forgot he did that....ie, maybe it's only on this one chapter. I don't want to be alarmist or get Keith in trouble, but I am worried. -- - Sheeri K. Cabral

I'll address this directly with Keith on Monday; obviously, plagairizing content in this manner is unacceptable, and we do need to know if this is isolated or more widespread, and address accordingly. I'll get back to you soon---thanks again, Bob
